| THE BEECH CROFT BITCH | |
|
Here's where the Roadwitch Trial has a good bitch about all the multiple problems it has, all of them caused by cars or by changes and damage to the street made by cars.
It is a case study in all the things that 40 years of car-first roads policy has got wrong. As of March 2007, the Department of Transport's "Manual for Streets" rejects this old-style thinking, and outlines the new best practice. This new philosophy wisely puts pedestrians and residential amenity ahead of traffic when it comes to designing streets like this. In the meantime, we're going to have to address the difficulties presented by the legacy of official damage to the street. It's narrow. It has 65 kids living on it. It has a nursing home on it, with only one elderly lady brave enough to walk down the street. And because it's straight and you can see all the way to the end, it's a great place to roar down in an HGV! So a lot of van and car drivers who need to park (usually illegally) think it's necessary to 'get out of the way' of the speeding traffic and park on the pavement, making it unusable for pedestrians. While UK health and safety officials are busy knocking over "unsafe" gravestones, a 95-year-old resident was repeatedly falling over on the unsafe paving. She eventually gave up and used the middle of the street instead. |
